DESCRIPTION
The construction industry faced a significant challenge in 2017 as it grappled with a negative image, particularly among young and diverse individuals. In a bid to alter these perceptions and attract a more inclusive and youthful workforce, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the City of Glasgow College (CoGC) collaborated to commission an innovative and educational 3D game.
The primary objective of the game was to entice a diverse young workforce into considering careers in the construction industry. By creating an interactive and immersive experience, the game aimed to dispel misconceptions and showcase the dynamic nature of the sector, ultimately inspiring players to explore construction as a viable and fulfilling career option.
Working closely with CITB and CoGC, we embarked on an extensive collaboration to create a challenging, engaging, and contemporary game that would resonate with the target audience. Considerable research and input from industry experts and educators ensured the game’s authenticity and relevance to real-world scenarios.
“Construction Manager” empowered players to establish and manage their own construction companies within a virtual environment. Through the game’s mechanics, players were tasked with making crucial business-related decisions and faced the consequences of their choices, mirroring the complexities and challenges of the industry. The game incorporated elements of strategy, problem-solving, and critical thinking, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of the construction sector’s intricacies.
Following months of development, the client formally launched “Construction Manager” across various platforms, including Windows, Apple, and Android tablets, as well as Microsoft Xbox consoles. The multi-platform approach ensured accessibility to a wide range of players, catering to their preferences and increasing the game’s reach.
The launch of “Construction Manager” yielded exceptional results, exceeding all expectations. Within a span of five months, the game registered an astounding 100,000 players, highlighting its immediate popularity among the target audience. Industry partners, educators, and young players alike hailed the game for its immersive experience, educational value, and ability to showcase the multifaceted nature of the construction industry. By effectively changing perceptions, “Construction Manager” played a pivotal role in attracting a diverse and enthusiastic cohort of young individuals to consider careers in construction.
The collaboration between CITB, CoGC, and our team resulted in a groundbreaking gamified solution that successfully challenged negative perceptions of the construction industry. Through the creation of “Construction Manager,” the game not only engaged and captivated the target audience but also fostered a newfound enthusiasm for the sector among young and diverse individuals. By showcasing the industry’s complexities, rewards, and opportunities for growth, the game has hopefully contributed to shaping a more inclusive and vibrant future for the construction industry.
