DESCRIPTION

Avanti West Coast, a leading train operating company, partnered with our us to create a virtual reality (VR) staff training module. The primary objective was to provide Avanti West Coast staff with an immersive learning experience focused on familiarising staff with the hospitality carriage of their new Pendolino Trains. Through collaboration and innovative use of VR technology, we developed a module that allowed learners to explore a virtual train hospitality carriage, gaining hands-on knowledge of the carriage layout and operation of various equipment, such as the coffee machine.

 

Extensive consultations were conducted with Avanti West Coast’s training team to understand their specific requirements and desired learning outcomes.

 

Based on the consultations, we crafted a detailed design plan for the VR module. The centerpiece of the module was a meticulously created virtual train hospitality carriage, accurately replicating the layout and features of Avanti West Coast’s actual train interiors. This realistic environment enabled learners to explore and interact with various elements within the carriage.

 

To ensure an engaging and effective learning experience, we incorporated several interactive features within the VR module, allowing learners to acquire practical skills in a simulated environment:

 

Carriage Exploration:
Learners were able to freely navigate the virtual train hospitality carriage, exploring different sections and gaining familiarity with the layout and equipment placements.

 

Equipment Operation:
The VR module provided interactive simulations of operating equipment found in the carriage, such as the coffee machine. Learners could practice various steps involved in operating the machine, ensuring they gained hands-on experience in a risk-free environment.

 

Maintenance Procedures:
Learners were guided through virtual demonstrations of maintenance procedures for equipment within the carriage. They could engage in tasks like cleaning and troubleshooting, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of equipment maintenance best practices.

 

SUMMARY

Through the integration of VR technology, we successfully developed a staff training module for Avanti West Coast that delivered an immersive and hands-on learning experience. The VR module enabled learners to explore a virtual train hospitality carriage, gaining practical knowledge about the carriage layout and operation of essential equipment like the coffee machine. The interactive features within the module facilitated skill acquisition and maintenance best practices, contributing to enhanced staff competence and confidence.
